JOY LIKE A RIVER

Scripture Reference: 1 Thessalonians 5:16

Rejoice always.

As clearly evident, this verse of Scripture is one of the shortest in the Bible. However, the power of this statement can’t be emphasised enough.

Rejoice always – that’s to say; stay in the mood or state of joy always regardless of the present circumstances. Is that possible? Emphatically Yes! God won’t tell you to do something that’s out of your capability. This implies that you have what it takes to rejoice at all times.

There’s a significant difference between happiness and joy although we often use them interchangeably. Happiness as a mere emotional commodity is experienced by everyone. It’s based on the positive circumstances of life such as being healthy, having money, excelling at a project etc. It’s short-lived because life has its challenges.

The storms of life will sooner or later change the positive circumstance to a negative one, thereby causing sadness and sorrow to set in. This is the everyday experience of the world. You see them happy today but sad tomorrow.

Joy, on the other hand, is a spiritual substance deposited in the heart of every Christian at the rebirth – as the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). God isn’t yet to give you. You have already got it – right there in your heart. You see why you can and should be joyful 24/7.

Grace unto you,

Osei Barnie

  1. I’ve got a vivid picture in my head of a river. A river flows with fresh water. We need to stand in the river of joy and let it flow over all those bumpy rocks; washing over our problems worries and fears.
